This issue is devoted to the impact of hate on college communities and methods to prevent hate on campus.  The first article describes the Association of College Unions International's new program, STOP THE HATE!, in which 38 members from various regions become trainers on the subject of hate crime prevention through a newly devised campus train the trainer program.  In the following article, administrators are presented with a primer for developing effective interventions to overcome intergroup conflict, hate and bigotry on campus.  The third article discusses the many ways in which college unions and student activities programs can promote community building as a means for discouraging hate behaviors and intolerance.  The fourth article describes how student affairs professionals can best respond to individuals who display intolerance, hate or bigotry.   A review of literature dealing with hate crimes is presented in the next article.  The concluding piece is a book review of Hate Hurts: How Children Learn and Unlearn Prejudice.

This article discusses what hate crimes are and how they affect not only their victims but also their peers. Studies show how hate crimes can motivate students to get involved in organizations and diversity programs on campus. This would be useful in motivating students to start programming around examples of hate crimes on campus.

With email, chatting, video conferencing and other web-based technological forms of communication, the Internet has started new forms of communities on college campuses. This article shows how using the Internet effectively will help better communication and make the campus community stronger. This would be helpful for those looking to increase the number of student organizations or student unions who have active web pages and frequently communicate over the Internet.

This article addresses service issues from involving the community as a whole to individual recycling programs to defining what social justice is. It provides a good over view of the many ways a campus community can benefit and learn from being devoted to service.

This article gives a synopsis of the events surrounding the beating and murder of Matthew Shepard and the involvement of the Wyoming Union Campus Activity Center in programming around this hate crime. This article gives an example of such a severe event that affects the entire campus and how things can be done to inform and aid the emotional needs of the community in the wake of such a devastating occurrence.

This article discusses the growing diversity on American college campuses and programming suggestions related to diversity involving the campus community. It includes ideas for domestic and international students, racial and religious minorities, and involving people in the classroom and community. It provides examples from specific colleges of how they incorporated diversity in the community. This would be helpful for someone looking to get started with diversity programming on campus.

College Union Pubs: Building Community by the Pint. The Bulletin,

This article is directed at educating the community about alcohol through campus bars. It talks about designing the environment to be more about socializing and programming than just about beer but doing so in a way that still appeals to the college crowd. It also talks about how keeping alcohol on campus as opposed to making it so the students have to go off campus to drink can be beneficial. This article would be useful to any administrator or community member looking to educate and reform the way a college tackles the issues around drinking.

Widoff, Janet. Wellness program thrives with community involvement. The Bulletin, July 1998 (p 22).

The program "Healthy, Wealthy and Wise" at Pennsylvania State University teaches people in the community how to live healthier lives as well as providing information on HIV/AIDS prevention, drug and alcohol education, women's issues, blood pressure and cholesterol screenings and other health related issues. This program gives an example of possible programming ideas for other campus health centers to work with and inform the campus community.
